Photographing Mammoth Lakes

Mammoth Lakes is a treasure trove of epic, instagram-worthy locations. At the heart of the eastern sierra, Mammoth Lakes reaches elevations of 11000 feet and has a lot to offer, from relaxing lakes to dramatic, craggy mountain ranges. There is a little bit of something for everyone, and everything listed here is (mostly) easy to get to by a 2wd vehicle, and I tried to make this list short and concise, something you can hit in one day!

Hot Creek Geological Site

This location looks beautiful and almost any time of day and has become a very popular Instagram location. The road to get there is dirt and most 2wd vehicles can get there during the summer, but be mindful if it just rained, it can get muddy and rutted.

Minaret Vista

Minaret Vista

Park at the Minaret Vista lookout and take the trail to explore the area. It isn’t too long and you can catch a bunch of great angles of the Minarets as well as the surrounding area. This was taken late afternoon where there was a lovely haze settling in the valley.

Mammoth Mountain

Mammoth Mountain

If you get the chance, take the gondola and climb to 11000 feet in elevation to the top of Mammoth Mountain with literal 360 degree views of the Sierra Nevada and beyond. I recommend visiting this location on days with clouds in the higher atmosphere otherwise the sun can be pretty harsh at such a high elevation (or lower clouds will completely obstruct your views). Follow next to the bike path heading south for an overlook featuring most of Mammoth’s lakes, or a quick walk north west will give you views of Volcanic Ridge West and on a clear day, Mono Lake!

Twin Falls Overlook

Twin Falls Overlook

A popular Instagram spot, Twin Falls Overlook is a great place to catch the sunset at, you guessed it, Twin Lakes. I recommend getting here a bit early to scout for your spot and beat the crowds, especially on a weekend evening. While you’re there, don’t forget to look across the street behind you, the golden sun lights up the rock faces along Lake George and is a great shot to pick up!

Devils Postpile National Monument

Devils Postpile

Devils Postpile National Monument is an easy drive and comfortable walk to view this amazing natural feature. It can get crowded in the summer months on weekends so be prepared, and also bring plenty of mosquito spray.
